2018-06-08 - That You May Know
1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.
John writes to believers presenting his credentials as one who was an eyewitness to Jesus' presence, teaching and miracles. He is a credible witness to the truth.
There are times when we feel like our prayers are not heard. Charles Spurgeon wrote at one point that the heavens were like brass. That his prayers were reflected back to him. In moments when we are asking out of the will of God we might still be heard, but out requests may not be granted. If we are asking for something that is not in His plan for us, or sinful in nature.
James 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
I've seen other reasons listed, but they overlap with these. We do not let God be God and light our path as we walk. The hymn He Leadeth Me starts out, "He leadeth me, Oh blessed thought!"
1 John 1:7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
There are a few different possible answers to our requests. Yes, Not Yet, or I have something better for you. Trust that the Lord has your best interests at heart. He hears you. If your request is in His will it will be answered. It may not be answered the way you or I would like, but it will be answered.
Grace & Peace,
