2018-10-06 - Expect the Unexpected
Proverbs 27:1 (NIV)--Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.
On one Friday night, my wife and I went to bed anticipating a quiet Saturday. The next morning, I began experiencing numbness in my hands and feet. Within a few hours, I couldn't walk, and began falling every time I tried to stand. We quickly went to the emergency room of our local hospital, where I was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome. The next year was spent in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and a hospital bed at home. Our lives were completely changed. Our normal routines were thrown out the window. We lived from day to day. My wife took care of me twenty-four hours a day. I could not have made it without her. My recuperation was slow, and we did not live normal lives, for over a year.
The writer of Proverbs tells us that we should expect the unexpected. Our lives can be changed in an instant. Just read the local newspaper, or watch the nightly news on television. Lives are changed every day by accidents, shootings, and crime. As I am writing this, there is a story on the news about seven officers being shot by one disgruntled man. In Proverbs, we are told to live each day as it comes. We are to make the most of each day, for God. We don't know what tomorrow will bring.
