2019-02-09 - Detours
On the day I am writing this, traffic in our major metropolitan area is a mess today. A sinkhole has opened on one of the main interstate highways, thus forcing its closure. Thousands of vehicles are required to detour onto other roads and side streets. Some commercial trucks are having to go many miles out of their way, to get around the closed roads. This unexpected detour has created a major change in many people's lives.
2016 was a detour year for us, due to my Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Then we spent 2017 catching up. In 2018, we spent much time in NC, with Jan's father's illness and death and those procedures. Really the last three years have been necessary detours from what we consider a normal life.
We find several examples in the Bible of unexpected detours. In Genesis 37, we encounter the story of Joseph, who went to check on his brothers while they were grazing their flocks. Joseph's life then took a major detour. He was sold by his brothers to a group of Midianite merchants. Joseph eventually ended up in Egypt, in the household of one of the Pharaoh's officials. Joseph went on to earn the trust of the Egyptians, and became a high-ranking official. During a severe famine, his family came seeking food. Joseph saved their lives, by providing for them. Joseph explained the benefits of his detour by saying, "God sent me ahead of you, to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance." (Genesis 45:7, NIV). Joseph's detour had unexpected results.
What detours have been placed in your life? Did you get the job that you wanted? Did an unexpected illness change your life physically or mentally? Have you suffered the loss of a loved one? What will the outcome be? Like Joseph, our lives take detours. Joseph explained his situation to his brothers, saying, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good, to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." (Genesis 50:20, NIV) Do we trust in God to guide us through the detours of life?
