John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.
I recently read a book about the United States Army's Eighth Air Force and their role in World War II (We highly recommend their museum in South Georgia). Early in the war, these brave men fought against overwhelming odds. The casualty rate was tremendous. Few fliers survived the twenty-five mission requirement, to complete their tour of duty and return home. These bomber crews fought together in a small, confined space. They became a close-knit team, who fought not only for their country but for each other. Frequently, they sacrificed for each other. Some gave their own lives for their fellow crewmen. As all military members do, these men sacrificed being with their own families and living safely in their own homes.
Jesus tells us that "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." (John 15:13) While we may not be called to sacrifice our lives for others, we are frequently called to sacrifice our time, talents, and money for others. Serving others in church or the community is an act of love. Giving to others in their times of need is showing love. Jesus is our example on sacrificing for others. Are you following Jesus in this?
