[CF Devotionals] 2019-06-04 Life Jackets

- - - - - - -

Every year, over 1,200,000 people drown (world figures). This is astounding to me. But what is worse is that in many of those instances, they weren’t wearing life jackets. A quarter of the time, people who drowned from boats didn’t even have life jackets in the boat! And many of THOSE drowning victims did NOT know how to swim. It is unfathomable to me, that someone would go in water without a life jacket, if s/he didn’t know how to swim. I am a good swimmer, but I not only insist on wearing one in a boat, but I would take them along when I was commuting long distances to work during flood warnings. Even if you can swim like Diana Nyad or Mark Spitz, your arms could give out while waiting for rescue-or you could have an injury that prevented swimming. It is incredibly sad, to have so many needless deaths, when the prevention is so easy.. Not to mention, at least in the US, the law requires life jackets in boats. Like with most laws, there is a good reason behind it.

There is a similar thing going on spiritually. God has provided us with eternal life jackets. Every man, woman and child can be forgiven, saved for eternity and can spend eternal life with God. All that is required is to repent (turn from) our sins and then accept Christ’s sacrifice that He made on behalf of our salvation. He gave His life on the cross, so we wouldn’t have to die in our sins. God gives this as a gift, out of love for us.

Ephesians 2:8-9 Worldwide English Version
  1. You have been saved by God's love and kindness because you believed. It was not because of anything you did, but it was a gift from God.
  2. You were not saved by trying to do what the law says. So no one can be proud about it.

Just like with a life jacket, all we have to do is claim the gift and use it.
