2019-12-07 - The Christmas Tree- Pagan or Christian
A story on the radio today stated that this weekend would be the busiest of the year for Christmas tree sales. Also, these trees would be more expensive than usual, due to a shortage of supply. Why do we Christians put Christmas trees in our homes?
While Christmas trees originally may have had non-Christian origins, the early believers used evergreens to celebrate Christ’s birth. During the 1500’s, trees became a symbol of Christmas. Martin Luther is associated with the first use of candles on Christmas trees. Some Germans placed wafers on the trees, as a symbol of the Eucharist.
The tradition of the Christmas tree was brought to America. The tree, like Christ, became a central part of the Christmas celebration. Exchanging gifts around the tree reminds us of the magi bringing gifts to Christ.
As we decorate our trees at Christmas, let us remember Christ, who is our Center of our Christmas celebrations. Let us celebrate and share the Good News of Christ at Christmas.
Acts 10:36 (NIV) You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all
