[CF Devotionals] 2020-09-26 - Playing by the Rules

- - - - - - -

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV) These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Recently, on the news, I heard that our local professional football team lost a game in the last minutes of competition (I no longer watch football myself because it is way too political). A crucial mistake was made in failing to execute a play. Criticism soon ensued. Who was at fault?

The owner of the team said that he believed that the players failed to execute the play properly because they didn’t understand the rules. The coaches should have made sure that the players knew the rules and the players should have studied the rule book many times, to reach the professional level.

The same thing happens in life. People either do not know or do not care about the laws and feel they are above them or should get special entitlement to break them. They even hate and sometimes kill the very people who risk their lives to enforce the laws for the safety of all of us. They riot, burn and kill in the name of justice even when the parents of the deceased person say to stop, that they do not want violence. Most of our laws are based on the Bible's laws, on God's own word.

As Christians, do we understand God's rules of life? Where do we find them? What is our rule book?

We have that Holy Word, the Bible, to explain the rules of life to us. We have coaches in the form of pastors and teachers to help explain them to us. We are responsible for studying the rules, so that we can succeed in life and be productive Christians. We are also responsible for helping other believers understand the rules.

Are you playing by the rules? Have you studied them lately?
