[PC-USA] 1999-02-14 - Compassion

This week we will look at verses about compassion. One definition of compassion is "sumpatheo," which Vine's defines as "to suffer with another." (Heb. 4:15 and 10:34). In his book Here and Now, the late Henri Nouwen has written, "joy is the secret gift of compassion."

God's compassion for us

Psa 25:6 (NNAS) Remember, O LORD, Your compassion and Your lovingkindnesses, For they have been from of old.

Psa 72:13 (NNAS) He will have compassion on the poor and needy, And the lives of the needy he will save.

Mark 6:34 (NNAS) When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.

Heb 4:15 (NNAS) For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

James 5:11 (NNAS) We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord's dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.

The compassion we are to show

Prov 12:10 (NNAS) A righteous man has regard for the life of his animal, But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.

Mat 9:13 (NNAS) But go and learn what this means: 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT SACRIFICE,' for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Col 3:12-13 (NNAS) So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.

Phil 2:1-2 (NNAS) Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.

Heb 10:34 (NNAS)For you showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and a lasting one.

I would like to wish you all a Happy Valentine's Day. : )
