[PC-USA] 1999-09-19 - Passages about Grief

Grief comes in many forms -- the loss through death of a family member or friend, the loss of a relationship, the loss of a job, distance in a relationship, the loss of a dream. Whatever pain you are facing, God cares about your pain, and hurts with you. We will look at some of what His word has to say about grief.

Examples of Grief in the Bible

  • Job's pain was so deep, that those who knew him well did not know him.

Job 2:12-13 (NNAS) When they lifted up their eyes at a distance and did not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them tore his robe and they threw dust over their heads toward the sky. Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

Jer 31:15 (NNAS) Thus says the LORD, "A voice is heard in Ramah, Lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; She refuses to be comforted for her children, Because they are no more."

Gen 42:36 (NNAS) Their father Jacob said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me."

God Himself Feels Grief

  • The Grief of Losing a Friend to Death

John 11:34-36 (NNAS) And said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to Him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus wept. So the Jews were saying, "See how He loved him!"

  • The Grief our Sins Cause God

Eph 4:30 (NNAS) Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

  • The Grief of a Separation in a Relationship

Mat 27:46 (NNAS) About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

  • Our Heavenly Father Cares So Much About Our Pain, that He Keeps Track of Our Tears:

Psa 56:8 (NNAS) You have taken account of my wanderings; Put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book?

Dealing with Our Grief

  • When We Grieve, We Should Pray Honestly, Giving God All Our Feelings:

Psa 62:8 (NNAS) Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.

  • We Should Stand in Solidarity and Compassion with Those Who are Grieving:

Rom 12:15 (NNAS) Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

  • Reminder that There is Hope for us When We Grieve

1 Th 4:13-14 (NNAS) But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

Rev 21:4 (NNAS) And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.
