1996-07-18 - Our AWEsome God
Hi everyone! I was reading Psalms 24:7 this week during my devotional time: Psa 24:7 (NIV) Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. I started thinking....Do I, do we, really appreciate His glory and majesty? Don't get me wrong. I believe He wants a really close relationship with us. After all, He wants us to use the word "ABBA," which translates "Daddy." And I believe in what Psalms 62:8 says about "pouring out our hearts" to Him. I am a blunt pray-er. However....I tend sometimes, to under emphasize the majesty and glory of God, and I need to acknowledge them every day. He is HOLY, and to be Holy means to be "separate." He is separate from all others. There is no one like Him anywhere.
Deu 33:26 (NIV) "There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in His majesty.
Exo 15:11 (NIV) "Who among the gods is like you, O LORD? Who is like you-- majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?
We need to remember that it is important to God that we glorify Him; in fact, Jesus did things for God's glory:
John 11:2-4 (NIV) This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. 3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick." 4 When he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it."
In the Old Testament times, God did things specifically for His glory:
Exo 14:4 (NIV) And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for Myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD." So the Israelites did this.
We are surrounded by evidences of God's glory and majesty:
Psa 19:1 (NIV) For the director of music. A psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
I hope that you will join with me in following the admonition of this verse:
Psa 29:2 (NIV) Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.
