Make Your Money Count, Part 5

Today I want us to simply let the Bible speak to us, as we continue this series on money matters. Take time to reflect on these passages, and pray for God's guidance.

Commandment # 1

You shall not slough off - but work hard.

Hard workers have plenty of food; playing around brings poverty. Proverbs 28:19 (New Living)

Work hard and become a leader, be lazy and never succeed. Proverbs 12:24 (Living Bible)

Commandment # 2

You shall not compete with the Joneses.

Enjoy what you have, rather than desiring what you don't have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless; it is like chasing the wind. Ecclesiastes 6:9 (New Living)

Commandment # 3

You shall not spend money impulsively.

Why spend money on what does not satisfy? Isaiah 55:2 (Today's English)

Commandment # 4

You shall not make a major financial decision without wise counsel.

Don't go ahead with your plans without the advice of others .. Proverbs 20:18 (Living Bible)

Commandment # 5

You shall practice the 10-10-80 plan.

  1. A. Pay God with the first 10%
Honor the Lord by giving him the first part of all your income .. Proverbs 3:9 (Living Bible)

Honor God with everything you own; give him the first and the best. (The Message)

The purpose of tithing is to teach you to always put God first in your life. Deuteronomy 14:23 (Living Bible)

  2. B. Pay Yourself with the second 10%
Money that comes easily disappears quickly, but money that is gathered little by little will grow. Proverbs 13:11 (New Century)

  3. C. Pay Everybody Else with the Remaining 80%
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another. Romans 13:8 (New International)

Commandment # 6

You shall trust God.

My God will meet all your needs .. Philippians 4:19 (New International)

Commandment # 7

You shall use some money for personal enjoyment.

Place your hope in God, who generously gives us everything for our enjoyment. 1 Timothy 6:17 (Today's English)

Commandment # 8

You shall acept the payment of God for your sin debt.

You were dead, because you were sinful and were not God's people. But God let Christ make you alive, when he forgave all our sins. God wiped out the charges that were against us for disobeying the law. He took them away and nailed them to the cross. Colossians 2:13-14 (Contemporary English)

God canceled the record that contained the charges against us. He took it and destroyed it, by nailing it to the Cross. Colossians 2:14 (New Living)
