Installment 3 ~ Music

Psalm 139:23-24 (The Message)
Investigate my life, O God,
find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me,
get a clear picture of what I'm about;
See for yourself whether I've done anything wrong ...
then guide me on the road to eternal life

During this time of the church year, many churches play only sober music during services, nothing festive. This isn't because they want to be morose; rather, they are trying to help members to focus on Christ's sacrifice for our sins, as well as any areas in our lives that we need to change.

Some Christians, find it meaningful to use hymns in their private meditation. I highly recommend this, to freshen your private or family devotional time. Even if you "can't carry a tune in a bucket," you can meditate on the words, or use them as a prayer. Here are a few suggestions:

Forty Days and Forty Nights (by George Hunt Smytian)
Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley (American spiritual)
Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days (Claudia F.I. Hernaman)
What Wondrous Love Is This (American Folk Hymn, circa 1811)
When We Are Tempted to Deny Your Son (David W. Romig)

If you don't own a hymnbook (or can't borrow one from your church), you can visit the website cyberhymnal.org.
