[CF Devotionals] 2009-01-09 - The Problem with Kids

Parenting is not easy. I was up late with my youngest again. My oldest had gone to bed on time because he was tired but that meant he had been whiny all day long. The Bible says they are a blessing and gift from God but some days or nights it is hard to see how. But on those days, we just have to go by faith and realize God knew what he was doing when he gave us each child. I must choose do I complain about the gift or praise the giver.

Everything that happens is allowed by God and he wants what is best for us so I must trust him more on days like this. No child is a mistake. Yes it takes a man and woman but it also takes God.

Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV) For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

When life begins he is there. He is the source of life. No one is born without God's touch.

God – When children are up all night or cranky, help me not to see the problems but to see it as an opportunity to love them and hold them as you do for me when I am cranky. Thank you for my arrows. Amen

Psalm 127:3-5 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. 4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. 5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

As I said a moment ago, parenting is not easy. But it is worth it. I would not give up all the sleepless nights or headaches if it meant even giving up a single one-toothed smile from my youngest or good night hug from my oldest. God is good and being a parent helps me draw closer to him by understanding him just a bit better.
