What Would They Say Series #10
Then the king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, "How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?" It pleased the king to send me, so I set a time. (Nehemiah 2:6)
Nehemiah has always been a professional and a hard worker. He never lets his emotions show, until today. Naturally I didn't want anything getting in the way of his Cupbearer duties, nor did I want his mood affecting the others in the palace, so I asked him what was wrong. Nehemiah was very candid. He told me his brother sent word that Judah, his birthplace, was destroyed - and requested time off from his duties to help rebuild the city.
With my queen sitting beside me, I asked how much time he would need. He answered and asked for my help in getting to Judah safely, along with providing supplies and timber for the project. I generously permitted Nehemiah his requests. It would be difficult, but would adjust without Nehemiah. I couldn't deny him this request after his heartfelt plea, could I? What kind of king would I be?
Lord, Let me have the right expectations and shake off the pressure that others or I put on myself. I don't have to be the perfect person. I just have to do my best and be faithful to You. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
If you were Nehemiah's boss, would you have given him time off? What would you base your decision on?
