[CF Devotionals] 2011-12-19 - What Would Joseph Say?

Matthew 1:18-25

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. (Matthew 1:24)

I loved Mary and wanted her as my wife. How can we be married now when she tells me she's with child? That's impossible. The baby has to be someone else's; it can't be mine.

I didn't want Mary to be disgraced, and decided to break off our ties privately. As I was trying to make sense of the situation, I drifted off to sleep, and had a dream where an angel set the record straight about the origin of the baby inside Mary. She had not been unfaithful to me. I did not understand fully how or why the Holy Spirit was involved with placing a baby in Mary's stomach, but I couldn't argue with facts delivered from an angel.

It was strange, but clear, that Mary would need me more than ever. When I awoke, the words of my dream were so fresh in my mind, thatI reconsidered and we were married. Not only were we planning to have a baby via immaculately, Mary and I continued to not be intimate with each other until Jesus our son was born. We could have had marital relations with a clear conscience, but we loved God more than our physical needs dictated. I wanted Mary to know I was a man of integrity. What an honor it is for me to be the Earthly father of our Savior.

Lord, Your special plan may not seem practical or conceivable to many. It seems everyone else is getting ahead, and I'm doing what is right and not getting very far. Help me to not judge others, and to realize how truly blessed I am. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
