2018-03-19 - Powerful Prayers
We pray that you will also have great wisdom and understanding in spiritual things so that you will live the kind of life that honors and pleases the Lord in every way. You will produce fruit in every good work and grow in the knowledge of God. God will strengthen you with his own great power so that you will not give up when troubles come, but you will be patient. And you will joyfully give thanks to the Father who has made you able to have a share in all that he has prepared for his people in the kingdom of light. (Colossians 1:9-12 NCV)
The apostle Paul wrote the above prayer for people he never met. He prayed that the Colossians would have great wisdom and understanding in spiritual things. They would live a life which honors and pleases God, and for thankfulness, patience, and God's strength.
Paul's heart was in the right place. He didn't need a personal connection to pray for fellow believers. Here was a man in his 60s, imprisoned, still wanting people to look to Jesus. At that moment, he didn't cry out to God for his needs or feelings; he encouraged the Colossians. What if we had the desire to pray with such selflessness?
"May everything good from God our Father be yours!" (Colossians 1:2 MSG)
Lord, May we be filled with knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, bearing fruit in every good work and increase in our knowledge of You, our Lord and Father. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
